CPS Outram

The Genesis of Outram Centre

In 1998, a group of nurses from the Catholic Nurses Guild (CNG) in SGH started a small group sharing of God's word among themselves during their lunch break.  Father Paul Staes was invited to facilitate the group. Other fellow Catholic employees working in SGH were invited to join in.

After some time, some members felt a spiritual emptiness and started to debate on having a Mass instead. However, it was rather difficult for the group to "organise" Masses; they need to come under some organization.

By the grace of God, Dr Douglas Ong, a member of the group was approached by Mr Dennis Tang, then the President of the CPS to join the Catholic Prayer Society. Three of the representatives, Douglas, Susan and Alicia attended the CPS ex-co meetings to understand more about CPS.

After much prayers and discussions, the group decided to come under the CPS umbrella. The first mass was celebrated on 3rd November 1999 at the Medical Alumni Association, where it is still being held till today.

The first CPS Outram working committee was established with Douglas leading the group. The committee met monthly to reflect the work done and to identify areas for improvements. Meetings were held during the lunch hour with fellowship and work combined.

Then, the attendances at the weekly Masses grew.  Retreats, workshops and dinners were organized for the people to come together for bonding and spiritual development, keeping in mind especially our Filipino colleagues who were our first choir members.

In March 2003, during the SARS outbreak in Singapore, SGH was badly affected. This in turn affected our CPS Outram. Tight safety and contact tracing controls were in place and campus employees were not allowed to meet each other. As most of our Mass-goers were from the SGH campus, there was a need to temporarily stop the lunchtime Masses.

Outram Campus CPS  Mass resumed  in January 2004, though the congregation has since dwindled. But as Jesus himself puts it: "if one or two gathers in my name, I will be there." So in spite of all setbacks, we still continue to serve the community within the SGH campus.

The current committee members are :

Ms Cecilia Leong (CPS Exco member)
Ms Iris Koh (CPS Exco member)
Ms Nancy Wee (Treasurer - Outram)
Ms Anita Ow
Ms Susan Loh
and Dr Khoo Tan

Most of the individuals are the original committee members since the inauguration of the Outram CPS. The committee recognises the need to bring new blood for leadership renewal, and is actively recruiting new members to participate in different areas of services  to serve the Lord. We hope to identify new leaders from the newcomers.  It is encouraging indeed since the beginning of 2008, to see a good number of volunteers coming forward to serve in the various ministries, be it lectors, helpers in setting up the
altar etc.

With God's grace and good faith, CPS Outram will continue to serve the healthcare community within the Campus.
