CPS Outram

The Genesis of Outram Centre

Catholic Prayer Society (CPS) Outram started its humble beginnings in 1988 with a group of nurses from the Catholic Nurses Guild (CNG) who were working in Singapore General Hospital (SGH). They shared the Word of God with fellow Catholic employees working in SGH during their lunch breaks.

After some time, some members felt a spiritual emptiness and started to debate on having a Mass instead. With God’s grace, Dr Douglas Ong, a member of the pioneer group was approached by the then President of CPS who encouraged the group to start CPS Outram.

The first mass at Outram was celebrated on 3 November 1999 at the Medical Alumni Association building (where it is still currently held). Weekly masses were scheduled during lunch-time on Wednesdays, with two sessions at 12.15pm and 1.15pm.

Due to the SARS outbreak in March 2003, the lunch-time masses were suspended because of public health safety concerns. Masses were resumed only in January 2004.

The Influenza A H1N1 outbreak in Jul 2009 led to the suspension of lunch-time masses once again. Masses resumed on 9 September, with a single session at 12.15pm.

In the past 10 years, CPS Outram has seen three generations of leaders, each stepping up to serve and volunteer in the various ministries. We trust that through our service, our relationship with God will be deepened and strengthened.

We find strength and faith in the Eucharistic Celebration. It is hoped that CPS Outram continues to serve as a platform for working people to live out their Catholic faith more fully during their work week.
